In years past, Conrad’s family has secured walk-on camp sites high up in the mountains at Tony Grove Lake in Logan Canyon, Cache Valley, Utah. Last year, their good fortune ran out and they were consigned to a camp next to the highway at Red Banks campground. All the luck wasn’t bad when this old gnarly willow tree caught Conrad’s eye while setting up camp. There wasn’t time to paint on the spot, so Conrad recorded some reference photos on his cel phone which he later used to create this charcoal pencil & watercolor painting in his studio. The inspiration for the medium came from sketches and paintings he did 20 years ago. After reviewing the old stuff, he decided to explore charcoal and watercolor again. The expressive nature and character of charcoal ls so different and exciting than say — pen and ink. Charcoal will bleed, so, it’s sprayed with fixative to hold it still. But, fixative repels watercolors, so combining them together produces unexpected results! It’s like a salad made with vinegar, oil and spices. In some places the mix saturates and in others, it spreads. In the end, the results tantalize our visual taste buds. Conrad had a lot of fun drawing and painting this seasoned campground sentinel and exploring this medium combination anew - hope you find some subtle satisfactions in viewing it yourself!
