"Boots for Maurice & Ruby"
11.5”x15” or 8” x 10” Full-Color Fine Art Edition Printed on White 80 Lb Paper Cover Stock
These are reproductions of the original artwork Wm Conrad Bowen drew with graphite pencils, on a white 10”x13” sheet of drawing paper and then applied a graded yellow wash in the background with watercolor.
As a Senior, Conrad represented Sky View High School as the Sterling Scholar in art. Though he didn’t win the state competition, it was a great honor to be included in that class of students. This piece was included in his portfolio submitted by Ken Roe, his high school art teacher for three years. The following year at Utah State University, Conrad met and became great friends with other students who competed in that state competition.
While growing up, Maurice & Ruby Obray lived across the street from Conrad. Maurice was a brother to Conrad’s grandmother Hortense Obray Norris who passed away 4-1/2 years before Conrad was born. The direct family connection wasn’t fully appreciated until later in life, Conrad just recognized them as great neighbors, friends and mentors. During college, many a late-late night, Conrad would see Ruby’s kitchen light still burning bright and run across the street with unfinished art-board in hand, tap lightly on the front room door as not to awaken Maurice sleeping in the adjacent bedroom and join her dressed in her trademark apron in the kitchen for an impromptu art critique and in-depth visit covering any subject dealing with life: “Those were the days my friend…” This old pair of work “Boots” lovingly framed by Maurice’s skilled hands adorned a wall in their home until after they both passed away. When their home was sold, the original art was returned to Conrad.
