"Richard & Fay's Place"
15”x11.5” Full-color Art Edition Printed on White 80 Lb Paper Cover Stock
This is a reproduction of a commissioned original 16” x 12” charcoal pencil & watercolor painting on a Blick Premier 100% cotton Hot Press 140 Lb Watercolor Block by Wm Conrad Bowen.
For Conrad, having someone say “I’m a fan of your paintings,” is appreciated and gratifying. On Occassion, someone says that and then asks him if he could paint such-in-such for them. For him, seeking out commission work hasn’t been a priority. When Clark Kidman ask him about doing this painting for him, the timing and circumstances seemed to be just right. Conrad shot some photos on location of this quiet residence in Milcreek, Utah which he transferred to his laptop and used as reference material to created this charcoal pencil & watercolor painting in his studio. The inspiration for the medium came from some sketches and paintings he did 20 years ago. After reviewing the old stuff, he decided to explore the mediums anew. The expressive nature and character of charcoal is so different than say — pen and ink. Charcoal will bleed, so, it’s sprayed with fixative to hold it still. But, fixative repels watercolors, so combining them together produces unexpected results! It’s like cooking something sweet and sour. In the beginning it doesn’t make much sense combining vinegar and sugar, but the results tantalizes the taste buds. Conrad had a lot of fun with this painting exploring the combination of charcoal and watercolor - hope you find some subtle satisfactions in viewing it.
